And say it fast, before the MAGA people can turn it into something ugly.
I just watched Kamala introduce her VP pick, Tim Walz. Great speeches, all. It is truly inspiring for “liberal” to stop being a dirty word in America. I’m a liberal and proud of it. As Kamala says, liberals are the people who truly believe in freedom. Conservative means going back to the dark ages. “What! You’re saying that the Sun doesn’t go around the Earth? It’s a red hot iron suppository for you, me laddie!”
But I’m predicting that Tim Walz will learn the hard way why you have to check every word with staff and you don’t go wandering off script. Minnesota isn’t the national stage. Professional wrestler Jesse Ventura was elected governor of Minnesota.
Don’t get me wrong. More than any other politician I can think of, Tim Walz reminds me of Harry Truman and Truman was a great president. I fully support the Harris-Walz ticket. I would vote for Walz as president – ESPECIALLY if he was running against either Trump or Vance. I’m just saying that I hope this doesn’t blow up on him like Biden’s debate or Vance’s “Cat Lady” comments.
Here’s what happened (literally just a few minutes ago).
During Walz’s speech, he was going on about how he would just LOVE to debate Vance. And then he said, “If we can get him off the couch.” I think he was suddenly a little worried because then (I think … if memory serves … I don’t have it recorded.) he doubled down and said something like, “Did you see what I did there?” I hope he didn’t say that.
I didn’t have any idea what he was talking about so I looked it up. All of the fact checkers agreed. The original meme was not only a lie, it was a deliberate lie. The author just wanted to post a lie that was so outrageous that it would go viral.
Here is Snopes fact checking it (a reliable fact checker) …
On July 15, 2024, X user @rickrudescalves posted (archived) that Republican U.S. Sen. JD Vance of Ohio wrote in his 2016 memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis,” about thrusting his penis into “an inside-out latex glove shoved between two couch cushions.”
The X user even included a page reference to make it look more legitimate.
Snopes (and every other fact checker I saw) makes it very clear. The post was a despicable lie. But Walz evidently bit on the hook and so, in his folksy way that usually works great for him, put it right out there for the whole nation in first speech.
I think Walz is more of a victim of the lie than anybody now. I think it was an innocent mistake that he will regret. But he seems like a guy who can learn from mistakes so I hope this will be his first and last.
Every other sentence in a typical Trump speech is an outrageous lie. It is to America’s shame that he can get away with it.
