FRANKLIN rOOSEVELT – Hero and Traitor

What does this tell us about the crisis with Biden?

Any student of American history has to acknowledge the transcendent contribution of Franklin Roosevelt to American success and the success of democracy itself. From his principled acts to lift America from the global depression to the victory of WW II, Roosevelt was a heroic figure.

But it wasn’t all good.

Author and historian David Roll, in a new book about President Harry Truman (Ascent to Power), documents Truman’s struggle to lead America when Roosevelt died after Truman had only been vice president for 82 days. There had been only two meetings between the two men. WW II was still raging in the Pacific. Truman hadn’t even been informed about the secret project to build the atomic bomb.

Roosevelt, for all his accomplishments, had abandoned America in our hour of need. Truman’s ability to take over and lead America at such a critical moment puts him in the same league with Roosevelt. Maybe even higher.

Why did Roosevelt do it? He knew he was gravely ill. He knew that there was every reason to think that Truman would be called to serve and that he would need to be able to hit the ground running. The answer is the dark side of the same qualities that made Roosevelt a great leader. A lifetime of experience had taught him to depend on himself.

I love Paul Simon’s poem ..

So, I’ll continue to continue
To pretend
My life will never end
And flowers never bend
In the rainfall.

Which brings us to Joe Biden. He also has a record of accomplishment for his country to be proud of.
But the time to pretend is over.
It’s time to pass the torch.
