My Take On Biden’s State of the Union Address

First on the agenda … I was not pleased when Obama picked Biden as a VP partner in 2008. The reason is that I believe Biden “sold out” – politically – when he was the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. He allowed Republican partisans to shove America onto the first step down a slippery slope which has now resulted in the loss of women’s control over their own bodies in the reversal of the Supreme Court Row v. Wade decision, and so much more. The decision to allow Trump to further delay justice is just more evidence of how far down that slippery slope we have gone. Being an old guy, I remember Biden’s mistake back then. I will not forget what happened then. But, also as an old guy, I can put it in context and I can forgive. I am a Biden supporter.

Biden was a young (relatively) senator in 1991 and didn’t have the wisdom of experience that he has now. I believe what he said in 2019 on ABC’s “The View”. (With his acquired wisdom, that will probably be the last word we ever hear from Biden himself about it.) Biden said, “I did everything in my power to do what I thought was within the rules.” He then added, “I don’t think I treated her badly.” Biden has always been, and still is, a believer in the power of civilized behavior and the rule of law and precedent.

Ultimate blame really should go at the minority member of the Judiciary Committee, Utah’s own Orrin Hatch, who used the rule of law as a tool when convenient and something to be brushed aside when it wasn’t. Using his position on the Committee, he read from the novel, “The Exorcist” to trash Anita Hill and convinced Biden to not allow other female witnesses who would have supported Hill’s testimony. Hatch performed a similar dis-service in Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing.

But Biden convinced me that the wisdom of experience and age works for him now. His confrontation with a completely uncivilized Marjorie Taylor Greene during the SOU address was a hands down victory for Biden. And Utah’s Senator Romney – who still maintained a partisan stance in his remarks to CNN later – demonstrated what civilization looks like and partially redeemed Utah for re-electing Hatch for so many years. What Greene is doing to Georgia’s tattered reputation is sad to see.

Civilization only works when people are civilized. Biden was and he still is. The Democratic left wing tearing at Biden’s coattails are working against their own cause but don’t realize it. The people who think Trump is their salvation are completely ignorant of the lessons of history.
