Hot off the presses this morning, “Key Figure in Trump Organization Will Plead Guilty to Lying During Trial”. (New York Times headline – But it’s below the fold. The Washington Post doesn’t even have a page 1 headline.)

For those not following every twist and turn in the Trials of Trump, that’s the former CFO of the Trump organization, Allen Weisselburg. He’s already done hard time in New York’s infamous Riker’s Island lockup. He very likely will do more time. But the key question is, “Why doesn’t he cut a better deal with prosecutors by spilling the beans on his old boss Trump?” He could get away with nothing more than another fine. Does he like polishing the men’s room floor at Riker’s?

Weisselburg has never turned on Trump. He has never testified against his old boss and in this latest deal, he still won’t. It’s not that he doesn’t have any beans to spill. He was the CFO for Trump senior and junior and there’s no way that he doesn’t know a lot more that he’s never talked about. A mystery like this deserves an answer.

But first, I should clarify that everything here is pure speculation. There are no public facts that I know of. It’s the kind of MAGA conspiracy talk that Trump has become known for.

But it explains a lot for me. I offer it just as an idea for your consideration.

First, we do know that Trump is famous for holding back anything he thinks he can use to protect his own backside. Why did Trump (allegedly – the talking heads always say allegedly until the fat lady sings) steal those boxes and boxes of classified information? He didn’t give them up even when he knew that the FBI was going to come after him to get them. Only one answer makes sense. He was holding them back for future use.

So, it makes sense that he’s also holding back stuff from the decades when Weisselburg was running his errands. Big stuff. Important stuff. The feds might know about it, but they can’t prove it. And Weisselburg knows that they know. And Trump knows that Weisselburg knows that the feds know and the feds know that Trump knows.

It’s a knowledgeable conspiracy.

So, Weisselburg knows that if he turns on Trump, then Trump will just return the favor and provide the feds with the proof they currently lack to put Weisselburg away for real hard time. The kind that will keep him in concrete living quarters for the rest of his days. If Weisselburg turned, Trump wouldn’t have anything to lose by tripping Weisselburg onto the tracks.

That’s why this is page four news this morning. The feds also know that they won’t get any more out of Weisselburg. The feds will put Weisselburg away for a few more months because they can, not because it will make any difference with their main target, Trump.

The prosecution will probably be turned over to a promising junior lawyer as a skill building exercise.
